Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums, in Newcastle, UK, is a major regional museum, art gallery and archives service managing twelve venues, each with their own unique collections and supported by the five local authorities of the area. Two of these venues – Segedunum Roman Fort, Baths and Museum and Arbeia Roman Fort and Museum – are part of the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site. Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums holds outstanding collections of archives, art, science and technology, archaeology, military and social history, fashion and natural sciences. Collections range from small insects to large engines and working steam locomotives and include material of local interest as well as collections gathered from across the world. In date they range from contemporary items (including electronic games and MP3 players) to fossils which are hundreds of millions of years old. The vision of Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums is for everyone to have access to museum and archive provision in Tyne and Wear, and for everyone to use this access and to value it for the significant and positive impact that it makes upon their lives. Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums has selected EMu as its museum collections management system to manage its physical and digital collections (using EMu’s integrated digital asset management system) and to allow it to develop a range of public access and commercial services. The project will see over 100 databases migrated to EMu, making all the collections easily searchable in the one system and thus maximising access to the collections. Iain Watson, Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums Director, said of the decision to implement EMu: Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums holds outstanding collections, of international importance, and we are delighted to be working with KE Software in order to improve access to them. KE Software has a proven track record of delivering collections management, and together we are looking forward to using the technology available to us to deliver a world class service to our users around the world.
