Introduction

On Windows 2003/XP/2000, KE Software uses Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX (SFU) to provide a suite of Unix command tools and associated functionality. Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX is a fully supported Microsoft product designed to extend Windows functionality by providing a fully compliant POSIX subsystem in which applications can operate.

Requirements

• Microsoft Windows 2003 Server
  -OR-
  Microsoft Windows XP (Professional) and an NTFS file system.
  (Please note KE EMu cannot be installed on Windows XP Home Edition.)
  -OR-
  Microsoft Windows 2000 (Professional or Server) with Service Pack 2 or greater installed and an NTFS file system.
• Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX, version 3.5.
• Texpress for Windows 2003/XP/2000, version 8.1.003 or greater.
• TexAPI for Windows 2003/XP/2000, version 3.1.009 or greater.
• EMu Server, version 3.2.01 or greater.
• EMu Client, version 3.2.01 or greater.
• Microsoft IIS 5.0 or greater.
• PHP 4.3.11 or greater.

Pre-Installation Checks

1. Check for NTFS File System
2. Check Service Pack
3. Check Computer Name
4. Check Virtual Memory 

Installation Notes (Check Notes Column on Releases table for Client Specific Notes) 

1. Install Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX
2. Setup EMu user / group accounts
3. Install Texpress
4. Install EMu Server
5. Install EMu Client
6. Install EMuWeb
7. Install EMu WebServices

Check for NTFS File System(Windows XP/2000)

The disk for KE EMu must be an NTFS file system. You cannot install on a FAT file system.

1. Click the My Computer icon on the Desktop.
2. Right-click the drive letter on which EMu is to be installed (this will typically be C: drive) and select Properties.
3. Select the General tab.
   The File System: must display NTFS. If it does not you must convert to NTFS before you can proceed with the installation.
4. To convert a FAT file system to NTFS you must first be logged in as the local Administrator.
5. Next select Start>Run to display the Run dialog.
6. To convert drive C: to NTFS enter into Open:  convert  C:  /fs:ntfs  /v
7. You will be prompted to restart your computer.
8. The conversion to NTFS will proceed automatically on reboot.

Check Service Pack (Windows 2000)

On Windows 2000, you must have Service Pack 2 or greater installed.
To determine the Service Pack currently installed:

1. Open Windows Explorer
2. Select About Windows under the Help menu.
3. The About Windows dialog will appear. The Service Pack installed will appear next to the Windows Version number.
   If the Service Pack is not at an appropriate level you must install a new Service Pack before proceeding.

Check Computer Name

The Windows Computer Name must not contain any space characters:

1. Windows 2003/XP: Start Start>Control Panel, double click the System icon and the System Properties dialog box will appear. Select the Computer Name tab, then click the Change... button.
   -OR-
   Windows 2000: Start Start>Settings>Control Panel, double click the System icon and the System Properties dialog box will appear. Select the Network Identification tab, then click the Properties button.
2. If the Computer Name contains any space or blank characters you must edit the name to remove the spaces.
   If you change the name, you must restart your computer.

Check Virtual Memory

It is recommended that Virtual Memory settings be checked and possibly adjusted.

1. Windows 2003/XP: Start Start>Control Panel, double click the System icon and the System Properties dialog box will appear. Select the General tab to view the MB of RAM in the PC, then select the Advanced tab, then click the Performance Settings button. The Performance Options dialog box will appear. Select the Advanced tab.
   -OR-
   Windows 2000: Start Start>Settings>Control Panel, double click the System icon and the System Properties dialog box will appear. Select the General tab to view the KB of RAM in the PC, then select the Advanced tab, then click Performance Options.
   -OR-
   Dividing the KB RAM figure by 1024 will tell you how many megabytes (MB) of RAM your computer has. Note this number. (If you ignore the last 3 digits of the KB value you will get an approximate MB value).
2. In the Virtual Memory box click the Change... button
   and the Virtual Memory dialog will be displayed.
3. Select the drive on which the paging file is allocated in the Drive [Volume Label] box.
4. In the Paging file size for selected drive area note the Initial Size (MB) and Maximum Size (MB) settings.
5. Recommended minimum settings are:

6. If your settings are not in this range adjust the Initial Size (MB) and Maximum Size (MB) values as appropriate and then click the Set button.
7. Click the OK button to close the Virtual Memory dialog.
8. Close the other dialogs and the Control Panel.
9. If you changed the Paging File sizes a dialog is displayed indicating that you must restart your computer before the new settings will take effect. You may click No at this stage as further into the installation you will be required to restart your computer.
