Integrated object-relational database engine

The Vitalware database engine is object-relational. This engine is an open systems, non-proprietary DBMS that is optimised for the management of vital record information. It incorporates full support for structured, semi-structured, multimedia and free text information or any combination of these.

The primary strengths of the Vitalware database engine lie in the management of large volumes of information and thus the software is ideally suited to the requirements of vital records applications. The database engine provides extremely fast retrieval from massive collections of information. Its unique indexing algorithm provides the most desirable feature of becoming faster as queries become more complex. Yet it still delivers fast, on-line updates.

Another important benefit of Vitalware's indexing technology is its ability to handle large data sets without degradation in performance. Vitalware is implemented under most versions of Unix operating systems and is available on a wide range of hardware. Despite the broad range of supported platforms and architectures, Vitalware databases are completely portable between machines running the system.

Vitalware offers some key features that make it ideally suited for vital records applications and that are not available in standard relational DBMS:

• Object oriented table design. This dramatically reduces the number of tables compared to a normalised relational model. This has the effect of reducing the number of joins, increasing performance and greatly simplifying maintenance and future development.
• Text is a native data type and is fully index supported. Vitalware offers unlimited length text fields with full index support for keyword retrieval. This allows searching across all text fields in the system, irrespective of length.
• No limit to the number of fields in a table. This allows for complex objects to be represented in a single tabular structure.
• All fields in a Vitalware table may be indexed without performance or disk storage penalties.
• The more terms in a query, the faster the performance. This is the opposite of other DBMS.
• Web (Internet and Intranet) interfaces are built into the core DBMS product and are easily developed and customised.
• Vitalware imposes no practical database limits other than those imposed by the hardware and operating system. Therefore the system is applicable to databases of all sizes, from a few thousand records to hundreds of millions of records.
