The Manchester Blitz, or Christmas Blitz as it is also known, refers to the most severe German air raids over Manchester and neighbouring Salford and Stretford in 1940. Occurring on the nights of 22/23 and 23/24 December, it is estimated that 684 people were killed and 2,364 were injured. Numerous houses and many major buildings were damaged, including the Manchester Royal Infirmary, the Cathedral, Exchange Station, and the Royal Exchange.
This photograph taken on 23 December, 1940 shows a blitzed property on Miller Street near Victoria Station. It shows major fire damage to the warehouses of Baxendales Ltd.
Manchester suffered other bombing in the war years and its civilian dead are commemorated in a sculpture The Tree of Remembrance at Piccadilly Gardens, erected in 2005.
