Old Parliament House, Canberra, Australia
EMu user since 2003
|
Old Parliament House opened in 1927 and served as the home of
Australian Federal Parliament until 1988. The significance of Old Parliament
House lies in its historical and social value to the Australian people. The
House is a nationally significant 'museum of itself' and of Australia's political
heritage - so, as well as being a popular tourist destination, it is also a
precious place which needs conservation.
The House of Representatives - or the Lower House - is where
the majority party or a coalition of parties forms government. The Speaker
sat in the ornate chair at the head of the central table. The Government
sat to the Speaker's right while the Opposition sat to the Speaker's
left. The public and press occupied the galleries surrounding the chamber.
